Fanatical About Performance
Uni of Western Sydney’s Virtual Space Lab uses XENON Visualisation Technology
July 5th, 2007
MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA. The University of Western Sydney (UWS), renowned for its science, engineering and technology disciplines, recently opened its Virtual Space Laboratory (VSL) which will conduct research in computer graphics, immersive virtual reality, 3D scanning, photogrammetry and supercomputing. The VSL is powered by the unsurpassed visualization technology of XENON® Systems and will be used to generate immersive simulations of large scale environments. Current projects include; the virtual simulation of the university's campuses and confocal microscopy/MRI volumetric visualization.
The VSL VR wall utilises 18 1920x1080 SXRD LCD projectors to drive a 150" passive-stereo 3D screen for a total of 37 megapixels. The extremely high resolution VR setup enables multiple participants to be highly immersed, perceiving actual 3D depth and high realism.
All 18 projectors are driven by ten (10) XENON Nitro visual workstations based on AMD® Dual-Core Opteron architecture, NVIDIA® Quadro FX 4500G professional graphics running Gentoo Linux. The visual workstations are interconnected with 20Gbps Mellanox Infiniband for extremely low latency, high bandwidth streaming of Chromium OpenGL commands.
“XENON was selected for this project as they were the sole Australian solutions provider of state of art specialised hardware that we required. They were the only local company that could provide Mellanox® Infiniband high speed interconnects, NVIDIA® Quadro professional graphics systems and high end multi processor server and workstation solutions,” said Dr. Abram Santilli, Chief Architect of the Virtual Spaces Laboratory. “In addition, XENON® has very effective technical know-how, prompt service and is an authorised Government accredited supplier.”
